Feeling Frazzled? Get Organized!

I don’t know if you are like me or not, but when I look around me and my house is a mess and things are strewn all about, I tend to get a little frazzled. There is just something about chaos that makes me feel overwhelmed. I am here to tell you that you are not alone! As moms and homemakers we all feel that way sometimes. The best news is that you don’t have to feel that way! So if you are feeling frazzled, get organized! Here are a few of my favorite tips for having a more organized life.

Develop a filing system for your paper stash: Our bills and mail pile up pretty quickly on our desk. Coming to sit down to work at a desk covered in stacks of mail can cause us some stress. To keep this from happening, I simply created a desk filing system – bills, personal, leisure. I purchased a file folder holder for my desk and I keep folders in it so that when the mail comes in, I can file it away to look at when I do sit down at the desk. This has helped me so much with not feeling overwhelmed. I can then look at the bills as needed without losing one of them to trash.

Schedules: I thrive on schedules and plans. I try to sit down in the evening and list out everything I need to get accomplished the following day. I write them down first and then go back through and number them by importance. If you have a smartphone there are many apps out there that can help you do this (and most of them are free too). Then the next day I just get out my list from the night before and start getting my tasks completed. There is nothing like looking at your to-do list and seeing things crossed off because they were completed!

Put things back where they belong: I cannot emphasize this enough! One of the best ways to get organized and stay that way is to put items back where they belong. I know this might be hard if you have small children because they are notorious for pulling things out and leaving them wherever they last played with them. However, if you start training them when they are younger, both you and your kids will learn a valuable lesson. My motto is, “a place for everything and everything in its place”.

15 Minute Rule: Always find some place in your home each day that needs a smidge of organizing. Set a time for 15 minutes and begin organizing. Once the timer goes off, STOP! Pick up where you left off the next day and soon your home will be organized. Most of us moms can spare a small 15 minute window getting organized. In fact, I have found that during that 15 minutes I can load the dishwasher and get it started and fold a load of clothes.

By using these tips, you will be on your way to being less frazzled and more organized. Hang in there and remember – all of us moms are in this together! Don’t be frazzled, get organized!

  1. I am the same exact way! I get frazzled easily when my house is a mess. Sometimes the mess can be a bit overwhelming and I don’t know where to start, but I find that if I just start somewhere and methodically organize it works for me. I’ll have to try out the “15 minute rule” because I usually just organize/clean everything once I get going lol
