Lucid Memory Foam Viscoelastic Mattress Review

lucid linenspa mattress I decided to do my next review on the LUCID by LinenSpa Memory Foam Firm Viscoelastic Mattress because I own this myself and after several months of sleeping on it, I feel qualified to give an accurate review of it.

Why I Bought This Mattress

Back in June, my daughter moved out.  She decided to give her old bed to her 2 year old daughter and buy a king size mattress. After doing some research on the memoryfoam mattress, she decided to go with a LinenSpa memory foam mattress. She didn’t have a lot of money to buy a whole new bed, and king sized mattress sets can be quite expensive so the Lucid by LinenSpa seemed like a good choice.

I would have advised her against buying this king foam mattress, being that it was pretty cheap except it did have a 20 year warranty and she got it from Amazon, which I know is a trust worthy site.

I asked her how she liked it after she had been sleeping on it for a few weeks and she told me it was the best bed she had ever slept on. One day when I was at her apartment, babysitting my granddaughter, we took a nap on my daughter’s new bed. I had to agree. It was really comfortable.

Since my little granddaughter stays overnight at my house several nights a week, I decided to get a bed for her to sleep in and put it in my daughter’s old room.

Since I’m also on a budget, and I really liked my daughter’s memory foam bed, I decided to buy the same thing except because of the size of the bedroom, I got a queen size memory foam mattress.

I got my LinenSpa mattress from Amazon too and it came within a week. It came in a large box and it took 2 of us to drag it upstairs. I had bought the bed frame that Amazon recommended under their “Frequently Bought Together” section. If you want to take a look at it, you can find it here: Structures by Malouf HIGHRISE Folding Metal Bed Frame 14″ High Bi-Fold Platform Bed Base.

The bed frame was really easy to put together. It came in 2 parts that you just unfold and then you screw the 2 together. I am so mechanically challenged it’s sad, but even I was able to put it together within a few minutes.

Then I took the mattress out of the box. It looked so thin, I thought there was no way it was 10 inches thick. But  once I took it out of the plastic wrapper, and laid it out on the frame, it started to puff up. Within a few hours, it was a full 10 inches thick. A picture of it is to the right: foam mattress

You are supposed to let it air out for a day or two but it was really ready to sleep on by that night. I did wait until the next day to try it out.

My First Night Sleeping on My Memory Foam Mattress

When I did sleep on it, it was the best night’s sleep I have gotten in ages. I have neck and back problems from an old whiplash injury and I usually wake up sore and stiff in my legs and my back and neck are aching. But sleeping on this Viscoelastic memory foam mattress left me waking up without pain for the first time in years! I actually slept through the night without waking up multiple times. In my opinion this is the best mattress for back pain. I now sleep on this bed every night instead of the King size bed in my room. I consider it one of the best purchases I ever made and would buy it again in a heart beat.

What is Visco Elastic Memory Foam ?

You may be wondering what is visco elastic memory foam anyway. Visco elastic material allows mattress toppers to conform to your individual curves to relieve pressure points. Visco Elastic foam has higher resistance to change than traditional foam.

 The Pros of This Mattress

  •  It offers great support for your body and conforms to weight and pressure of your body.
  • Relieves back, neck and shoulder pain by reducing pressure points.
  • Good for any sized person.
  • It comes in the 10 inch size described in this review and also 8 inch and 12 inch sizes.
  • It comes in many sizes: Twin, XL Twin, Full, Queen, King and California King.
  • It has a antimicrobial  and anti-dust mite washable cover.
  • The mattress itself is also antimicrobial and mold resistant, allergen resistant and resists bacteria and dust mites.
  • It has a 20 year warranty which is much longer than most traditional mattresses.
  • Unlike some foam mattresses, this doesn’t heat up because of it’s open cell technology that allows for air flow.
  • You do not need box springs, just a platform or frame and the mattress.
  • Easy delivery and set up.
  • Free Shipping if you buy from Amazon.
  • Very affordable.
  • Doesn’t move around and jiggle when you move around on it like a traditional mattresses.

 The Cons of This Mattress

  • You will need to buy the “deep” sheets to fit the mattress properly. They are easy to find. I’ve seen them everywhere and got mine at Walmart.
  • Although there is a mattress cover on it, it isn’t water resistant so if that’s something you need, you will have to buy the waterproof pad separately.
  • You can’t use a traditional bed frame for it. Actually you can if you buy some plywood cut to the size of your frame and laid in the bottom of the bed frame. Otherwise you will need to buy a special frame or platform for it.
  • Some said in the comments it took a little getting used to but once they did, they loved it. I loved it from the first time I used it.
  • Some said there was a chemical smell when they first took the mattress out of the plastic wrapper. However, it will dissipate within a day or two. I didn’t notice any smell at all when I opened the mattress.

Who Are These Foam Beds For?

  • Anyone with back, neck, and joint problems.
  • Those who like firm beds.
  • Those who do not have much money to spend on a bed.
  • Anyone who sleeps in the bed with another person, specially if that person moves a lot during the night.
  • Parents who have kids who like to jump on their beds. These memory foam beds make it difficult to do that.

Who Are These Foam Beds Not For?

  • Those who prefer a soft mattress. Although some who thought this foam mattress was too hard, bought a soft foam or downy topper to go on top. It gives them the support they need and the softness they prefer.
  • Those who prefer to try out their mattress in a store first.

What Others Are Saying

“You could set something down on one corner and the other corner doesn’t even move. I spent double on a bed for DD 5 months ago from JCP but this mattress is less bulky, doesn’t make any spring sounds and much more comfortable than hers. ”

“I am so thrilled with this foam bed! I used to hurt waking up and have to put my shoulder back into place and so far I have not had to do that.”

“You can’t beat this mattress. I absolutely love it. Switched from a standard spring but this is the best sleep I’ve ever gotten.”

“It is very firm, but conforms well to your body. I used to wake up nearly every night with my legs or arms numb, but it has yet to happen with this mattress.”

“The first night sleeping on it was unbelievable! I slept like a bear in hibernation! But the best thing was that I was not hurting the next morning!”

“an added benefit is that when my girlfriend or I get in or out of the bed at night the other can’t feel them moving around. Its much nicer than a standard mattress”

“This mattress is accurately described as firm; soft and comfortable, though you won’t “sink” into it. It molds gently around your body while offering support.”

Is There A Warranty?

Yes! I mentioned it before but if you missed it, this mattress has a 20 year warranty. Much longer than most other mattresses!

What’s Included

The mattress and a zippered mattress pad that is already on the mattress. The only other thing you need to buy is the frame.

 Where to Buy

I may be biased because I buy most of my stuff off of Amazon. BUT, I did check around the internet, and found that Amazon did have the lowest price on the Lucid LinenSpa memory foam mattress. The savings were between 10 and 65% Plus with free shipping, it’s a no-brainer.  Click here to see what the current price is.

Below is a picture of my bed with the headboard and all the linens on.

If you end up buying one of these beds, or already have one, I’d love to hear your experience with it.

  1. Sarah says:

THANK YOU! This is a great review and the reviews on Amazon look good too! Can I put this mattress on top of a traditional boxspring used for a spring-form mattress?

  2. mommacat says:

I’m not sure if you can put it on box springs Sarah, but I don’t see why you couldn’t.

  3. IONUT POPA says:

These things are still very expensive, but if you look in the long term you’re investing in your health, something that can’t be neglected…

  4. mommacat says:

Yep, beds themselves are expensive but this was the cheapest one I could find that was comfortable too.

  5. Cy says:

I was interested in buying one of these mattresses about a year ago. I decided to keep the mattress I already had but now I really regret it. They felt soooo relaxing when I tried them out in the store.

  6. mommacat says:

It really is relaxing Cy. I’m finally sleeping through the night again. I definitely suggest going for one of these the next time you need to replace a mattress.

  7. Jeff Sherwood says:

I have never slept on anything more comfortable than memory foam in my life! I bought my first memory foam mattress a couple of years ago and it was one of the best investments I have ever made. This one definitely sounds like a great replacement when I get ready for one.

  8. mommacat says:

Ahh, another convert! I’m glad you like your mattress Jeff as much as I like mine.

  9. Mireille says:

This is a very complete review of the foam mattress. I only have a foam pillow but I like it very much and was wondering what difference it would make to have a whole mattress. I guess my next step is to go to the store and try it out, although I feel silly lying down on a bed in a showroom.

    • mommacat says:

Don’t feel silly Mireille. That’s what everyone does to try out a mattress. They expect it at the mattress store.

  10. Joanne says:

Great review! I have a king size bed, but we’re going to replace it after the holidays. I’ll definitely check these out. Thanks for the information. :-)

  11. Laura says:

We sold our Temperpedic as I didn’t think it was as good as it was when we got it (had it for 6 years). However, I didn’t like our new mattress within a few months. We can’t afford another Temperpedic and hopefully we will have good success as you did with Amazon.

  12. mommacat says:

I think you will love this mattress Laura. I sleep so much better on mine than I did my old mattress.

  13. Robert says:

    Where are these mattresses manufactured?

  14. mommacat says:

I don’t know Robert. I just changed the sheets today so I looked for a label with that info on the mattress but couldn’t find it. It could be on the underside of the mattress but I wasn’t about to try to flip it over to find out. It was probably on the box the mattress came in too but I threw that away a long time ago.

  15. Sharon says:

We just ordered a king! We’ll let you know how we like it :)

  16. mommacat says:

Lucky you Sharon! I’d love to have mine in a king size since I often have a 2 year old and various dogs sleeping in the bed with me. But my room is too small.

Hope you like it as much as I do!

  17. Derrick says:

Just ordered one of these last night, and was looking for reviews to make sure I didn’t make a bad decision. Thanks to your review, I feel much better about my purchase.

  18. mommacat says:

Let me know how you like it Derrick. I have had mine over 6 months now and I still love it.

  19. Crystal says:

I just bought a king size one too and wondered if I’d gotten another online cheapo something–you know those things that look like deals until you get the product and it isn’t what you are expected? After reading your review, I’m very excited about getting my new mattress in the mail!

You really can’t beat Amazon’s free shipping, and as a single mom, I don’t have to go look for someone to haul my new mattress with their truck–it comes right to my house yayy! Also, I bought a wood box foundation for mine from Amazon–think that will work okay on my bed b/c it’s an old style build with slats across the bottom of it. Thanks for the great and thorough review–I’ll be happily awaiting my new mattress, being that my current mattress actually has a complete indention where I sleep….

  20. mommacat says:

Hope you like your new bed Crystal!

  21. Cathy says:

I work with a mattress review site http://www.qmattresses.com and I think that they would really benefit from your input on this mattress. Really thorough review and I really liked how you listed the pros/cons of the mattress. Great review!

  22. Cathy Seymour says:

I have been looking at mattress options and reviews for 2 weeks and I just came across your site…thanks. My question to anyone with this mattress is: I am replacing my much loved but no longer made “Olympic Queen”; could I cut a King (76″ wide) down to an Olympic Queen (66″ wide)?

  23. mommacat says:

Yikes! I’d be afraid to try that unless you really know how to do it. I suppose you could if you had the proper cutting tool though.

  24. Susan Knudsen says:

Replying to Robert (Nov 2011) – we just received our Lucid by LinenSpa mattress and the box reveals Amazone received it from LinenSpa out of Logan, Utah. Whether or not it was manufactured there is unknown, but assumed.

  25. mommacat says:

Thanks so much for the info Susan!

  26. Jay R. says:

I did buy one and I have been using for about a week.
I do notice that the bed feels hot.
I do not have back or neck problems and so the softness seems too much for me!
How often people remove the cover and wash them?
    Jay

    • Jay, since I wrote the last reply, I have washed the mattress topper and it did fine. I washed it in warm water and dried it in the dryer and slipped it back on the mattress.

  27. Cathy Ratcliffe says:

    Hi Jay,
It’s funny. Some people think it’s too soft and others think it’s too hard. I think it starts out hard but molds to your body and that gives the feeling of sleeping on a cloud or being soft.

I have heard some think it’s too hot too. Not me, but then I tend to be cold natured so it feels great to me.

I’m not sure how often people wash the cover. I have never washed it. But then I often have a toddler sleeping in the bed so I bought a waterproof mattress cover to go over it. I have washed that cover maybe 3 times in the 14 months I have owned it. But since the cover that came with it is protected by the waterproof cover, I never saw a reason to wash it.

  28. Amanda says:

I’d like to ask if you or your daughter, or anyone who bought a king-size mattress of this type, could kindly think back to when it was delivered and describe the dimensions of the packaging. Was it packed flat, or rolled? I’m mainly interested in knowing if the box could fit in or on top of a minivan or SUV. My address is not deliverable by amazon, and I’d have to take it the rest of the way myself from the delivery spot. Thanks in advance!

  29. Hi Amanda,
I just asked my daughter and she says her king mattress came rolled in a box. She said you could bring it home secured on top of a SUV or minivan but it would probably be too long to fit in it.

    Hope that helps.

  30. Jason says:

I bought a mattress a few years ago and I am already replacing it because there is a big hump between my wife and myself. Have you noticed any sagging in your mattress up to this point? I really do not want to have the same problem again.

    Thanks!

    • Laura says:

      Jason:

I’ve not noticed it yet in my LUCID mattress. But, I wanted to tell you that it happened with my Temperpedic after 4-5 years. Temperpedic said it was normal and wouldn’t honor their warranty. I hated the fact that it felt like I was trying to roll uphill. So, although it might not help you specifically, I didn’t want anyone thinking that LUCID was inferior to Temperpedic. My theory is that if I have to replace this mattress every 3-5 years, I’ve spent WAY less than on a Temperpedic mattress.

  31. Hi Jason,
No lumps so far but then it’s just me in the bed and occasionally my 3 year old granddaughter.

I’ve had my mattress for about a year and a half and so far, so good.

    • Chris Bicek says:

      Hi Cathy!

I have an Ikea black wrought iron bedframe with one flat rod type thing going from the front of the bed to the end. Do you think this would be sufficient or should I buy the frame being offered by the seller?

      Thanks!

  32. Hi Chris,
Does the bedframe normally support just the top mattress and NOT boxsprings? I looked up a picture of one and that picture did look like just the mattress was on it but not seeing it in person, I couldn’t tell for sure.

If it does support a regular mattress without boxsprings, it will probably support this lucid memory foam mattress too.

If you aren’t in any hurry for the new bed, you can always try it and if it doesn’t work, then order the new bedframe.

  33. Deborah says:

Has anyone mentioned whether or not this mattress contains the flame retardant chemicals that were supposed to be banned in the US by 2013? Supposedly, these chemicals have caused everything from skin rashes, memory problems, auto-immune problems, and yes, even cancer. The problems are supposedly caused by nightly (and daily) exposure to the off-gases. Does anyone really know what’s in LinenSpa’s mattresses? I’m researching whether or not to purchase a LinenSpa gel mattress topper . I found one on Amazon.com. It’s listed as a LinenSpa 2.5 inch Gel Infused Ventilated Memory Foam Mattress Topper, size California King. My questions are these:

Is this product made in the US or is it manufactured in some other country?

Does this product contain a flame retardant chemical?

If so, which one is used in this mattress topper?

Does this mattress topper contain any Latex, whether natural or synthetic?

    • I really don’t know the answers to these questions Deborah.

I have contacted the LinenSpa company and asked them these questions. If/when I get a response, I’ll update in the comments.

  34. Deborah, I never heard back from the company but I checked on the bottom of my mattress and it says it was made in China. No mention of a flame retardant. And this is just for the mattress. I don’t know anything about the mattress toppers.

  35. Jane Allen says:

Cathy, This is a well-written and honest review. I enjoyed reading it.
